Many people today are saying that ‘Sitting is the new Smoking’? Do you have the sitting disease? Watch this short video, Sitting is the New Smoking by Lisa Johnson to find out.
“Inactivity research,” suggests that lack of bodily movement, such as when sitting in front of a TV, or a desk, or even while reading can be bad for your health. The average person spends 55 to 75 percent sedentary time in a 14- or 15-hour waking day. Researchers say that television viewing is calculated to take 22 minutes off of your life for each hour of viewing. They claim this is true even if you exercise for a short time each day.
The body was not created to sit for long periods of time because it creates tight muscles and weakness in our core. In addition, the scriptures tell us how much God cares that we take care of our body, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
I am aware of this issue because I am struggling with pain in my legs and trouble sleeping at night because of tight muscles in my hips, glutes, and hamstrings. With all this at stake, what can you do to change this? If you work at a desk, get up and move around every 20 minutes, get a treadmill desk or walk on a treadmill as you read or work, use a deskcycle to pedal as you work, use a VARIDESK so you can take turns sitting and standing at your desk, buy a moving chair/stool like a ‘Swooper’, try using a portable or speaker phone and walk as you talk, walk to someone else’s desk instead of calling them on the phone, or take the steps instead of the elevator.
While at home try soaking in a warm bath with Epsom Salts, or stretch with this 15 minute morning yoga exercise, or go online and find some hamstring exercises, or try some pain relieving techniques by Gary Crowley. You can even ask questions about your muscle pains to Gary and he will answer at All Experts, or try getting some massage therapy for those tight muscles.
Do you want the Sitting Disease? Absolutely not! So instead, make a choice to change your health by moving more often than you sit!
