In the last blog, Welcome 2015, we examined two things to do as we moved into the New Year – ‘let go’ and ‘reach forward’. The next step involves reflecting on our priorities. Priorities can also be referred to as core values or as our deepest longings. David Benner believes that our spiritual journey is profoundly shaped by our longings, so it is important to take time in identifying them. Once we have identified these values, we can establish a basic rhythm for living these out. A rhythm speaks of regularity that the body and soul can count on and is based on attitudes, behaviors, and practices that are regular and routine. “How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important to us, and, keeping that picture in mind, we manage ourselves each day to be and to know what really matters most” (Stephen Covey).
For me, my four highest priorities are: (1) My spiritual journey with Christ; (2) Open and transparent relationships (giving and receiving support); (3) Physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness; and (4) Life-long learning that includes a teachable spirit. These values are able to guide my choices each day. This doesn’t mean I never do anything outside of these four things, but that a good portion of my week is based on these things.
Sit down now and write out 3 or 4 priorities that are important. Maybe this question can help you get started, “How do I want to live, so I can be who I want to be.” Jesus is a good example of how to live your life so that you are able to answer this question. These seemed to be his priorities: (1) Spending time with the Father and in the Word, (2) Spending time with 12 men he discipled, (3) Ministry to the greater community, and (4) Giving up his life for others.
Once you have decided on your highest priorities, keep them in a visible place so that they can be a regular reminder of the choices you want to make on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis. This ‘rhythm of life’ can then help you to live in such a way that you can be who you want to be. Are you Ready? Get Set? Let’s Go!
